Databases
Fjordrun runs databases as services from templates: PostgreSQL 16, MySQL 8.4, Redis 7 and MongoDB 7. Each one runs as a single-replica stateful service with a persistent volume, a generated password and ready-made connection variables.
Create a database
In a project, add a service and choose Database, then the engine. Or create a new project and pick Database under Start with.
Connect from your app
Databases are private: they have no public domain and are reachable only from services in the same project and environment, at <service>.<environment>.internal. Reference the connection URL in your app's variables:
| Engine | Reference | Format |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL | ${{Postgres.DATABASE_URL}} | postgresql://postgres:<password>@postgres.<env>.internal:5432/fjordrun |
| MySQL | ${{MySQL.MYSQL_URL}} | mysql://root:<password>@mysql.<env>.internal:3306/fjordrun |
| Redis | ${{Redis.REDIS_URL}} | redis://default:<password>@redis.<env>.internal:6379 |
| MongoDB | ${{MongoDB.MONGO_URL}} | mongodb://mongo:<password>@mongodb.<env>.internal:27017 |
The name before the dot is the database service's name (case-insensitive). If you add a second PostgreSQL to the same project it gets a new name such as Postgres-2; use that name in references. If you rename a service, update the references to it. The Login details card on the database service shows the same values.
Connect from your computer
Databases have no public endpoint. To inspect data, run a one-off tool inside the project (for example a small service with a database client) or use your app's admin features. Do not add a public domain to a database service: domains route HTTP traffic only.
Backups
Fjordrun does not take automatic database backups during the beta. Volumes are Hetzner Cloud Volumes, which Hetzner stores redundantly, but that does not protect against deleted data, a dropped table or a deleted service.
Make your own backups, for example with a cron service in the same project that runs pg_dump and uploads the result to object storage (such as a MinIO service or an external S3 bucket):
bash
pg_dump "$DATABASE_URL" --format=custom --file=/tmp/backup.dumpSizing and cost
Databases are billed like any service, on actual CPU and memory use (measured per hour by default), plus the volume size at €0.10 per GB-month. New databases get a 1 GB memory limit. See Usage-based pricing.
Importing data
See the migration guides for dump and restore, for example Railway → Fjordrun.
