Client-side app
An Angular project (@angular/core) without SSR is built with your build script (ng build) and the browser output is served by nginx as a single-page app, so the Angular router's deep links work.
The output folder comes from angular.json (architect.build.options.outputPath of the default or first application), so dist/<project>/browser with the current application builder and dist/<project> with older ones are both found.
Server-side rendering
With @angular/ssr installed, the builder runs node dist/<project>/server/server.mjs. The generated server reads PORT from the environment.
Environment values
Angular has no built-in environment variable support at build time. If you generate an environment.ts from variables in a prebuild script, those variables are available during the build. See Build variables.
Start command
Leave it empty. ng serve is a development server and is ignored as a start command.
